- Use US Letter paper when the pattern is intended for American home printers.
- Select Actual Size or 100% scale. Do not choose “Fit to Page” unless the instructions specifically recommend it.
- Turn off options such as “Shrink oversized pages” or automatic border adjustment.
- Print in black and white if the pattern uses clear outlines and labels; this saves ink without changing the measurements.
- Use lightweight paper for testing and heavier paper or cardstock for a reusable master template.
- Compare the finished paper band with the head measurement before cutting fabric. Adjust the pattern before sewing if the fit is too tight or loose.
Use heat-resistant, tightly woven fabric appropriate for the intended work environment, and remember that a cloth cap is not a substitute for an approved welding helmet, face protection, or other required personal protective equipment. Wash and inspect the finished cap regularly, especially when it is worn around sparks, dust, or hot metal.
